Locally-owned and operated by longtime San Francisco Bay Area resident, Rick Bruce, Bay Area Mold Pros offers professional and unbiased mold testing and mold inspection services. Bruce offers over 40 years of experience in the construction industry as well as extensive training in mold inspection. This allows him to not only expertly identify when mold is present, but why it is present, from a construction-science perspective. When you work with Rick Bruce, you can expect personalized service and prompt response.

Rick Bruce has been building and remodeling homes in the San Francisco Bay Area for 40 years. “In 1977 I bought an old Queen Anne Victorian home in San Francisco that needed lots of work. I didn’t know anything about construction, so I bought the Time Life series on Home Improvement and read all of the books from cover to cover."

Over the next few decades, Rick and his wife purchased more than thirty properties in the Bay Area, renovating many of them, and building several homes from the ground up. “I worked nights as a police officer in the San Francisco Police Department, and swung a hammer all day. I learned all about construction through both practical experience and by working alongside lots of Irish carpenters in San Francisco.”

Rick retired as a captain from the SFPD in 2005 and immediately starting remodeling homes full time as a licensed general contractor. “It seems like every time we opened up the walls on our remodeling projects, we found dry-rot damage due to water leaks. We spent as much time repairing the dry-rot as we did on the remodel, and I began reading everything I could find on the science of drainage planes and construction water-proofing.”

One day, while remodeling a home in South San Francisco, Rick discovered a large amount of mold under the carpets in two of the bedrooms. “I knew we needed some professional assistance so I began looking for mold specialty companies online and interviewed several of them over a period of a few days.” What Rick discovered was that most of the companies he phoned were national franchise operations, and he ended up either speaking with answering services who were clearly reading from pre-written scripts, or leaving messages on answering machines and waiting for someone to actually call him back.

When Rick started actually meeting with the company representatives at the project site, he soon realized that he knew more about building science and the myriad ways in which water finds itself into homes than the experts he had hired. “I did what I had done years earlier; I started reading everything I could find on the subject of mold testing and remediation.” Rick soon earned several certifications in mold testing, and started offering this service as an adjunct to his well-established and highly regarded construction company, Bruce Construction, which for years has been rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau.

Rick eventually decided to form a separate company to deal specifically with mold testing, and Bay Area Mold Pros was born. Rick holds mold industry certificates from MICRO, Compliance Training, and is a member of the National Association of Mold Remediators and Inspectors.

Tyson Joins Bay Area Mold Pros

Rick’s son, Tyson, has been working with his father on construction projects since he could hold his own hammer. Tyson grew up around construction, assisting Rick with his home-builds until 2002, when Tyson went away to college to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Business Economics at the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Tyson graduated from UCSB in 2006 within months of Rick retiring from the SFPD and starting Bruce Construction, and he joined his father with his new company, again helping Rick build and remodel homes throughout the Bay Area. Tyson obtained his own General Contractor’s license in 2016 and formed Tyson Bruce Construction, a company focusing on kitchen and bathroom remodeling.

Tyson started working for Rick as a part-time mold inspector shortly after Bay Area Mold Pros began, but
decided to pursue mold inspections full-time during the Covid crisis.
